Early historians associated Paul Gauguin with modern genius, while his contemporaries accused him of plagiarism... Postmodern and feminist historians portray him as a colonialist misogynist and opportunist. More recent studies have associated him with a proto-postcolonialist who challenged European heterosexual sexuality.
Different methodologies lead to different interpretations that add to the richness of Paul Gauguin's work.

An opportunist, misogynist, paedophile and colonialist,
A postcolonialist and postgendered before his time
Three conflicting interpretations
